Hace un frío de mierda, estoy con un café mientras escribo esto y pensaba alguna forma de recomendarles a The Juliana Theory, bah, no es que no pueda recomendarlos así a la primera, pero mi idea siempre es que se identifiquen con la canción y lo que me produce, o de alguna manera solo entiendan lo que a mi me produce.

La canción no tiene nada de especial, la banda no tiene nada de especial, incluso este post no tiene nada de especial que aportar, solo que hace mucho frío, con un café en la mano y mirando el mar por la ventana, esta canción parece ser el soundtrack de este momento.

No soy un tipo muy religioso, o si lo soy, quizás me lo tomo con humor y por eso hay gente que piensa que no lo soy, así que mejor manera de reírnos un poco en semana santa, con un tema que habla de la resurrección. Los Zombies.

El psychobilly es el género que obtienes al meter en una juguera al rockabilly, punk, y un montón de películas de horror de los años 50. Donde al final obtienes un rock and roll muy divertido en la estética, que incluyen bajos/ataúdes y peinados sacados de Grease, y en las letras, con títulos como Gargoyles over Copenhaggen, Demons Are Girls Best Friends, Walk Like A Zombie y un sin número de referencias pop que harían que los Locos Adams se revolcaran en su tumba (lo siento, me sentí tentado a terminar la frase así).

En este caso los dejo con un temón de los Nekromantix, máximos exponentes del género (quizás junto con The Horrorpops, y Tyger Army), banda danesa formada por ahí el año 1989 (mas información wikipedia) y este tema del disco Return of the Loving Dead altamente recomendado para rockanrollear.

Siempre he pensado que en la música hay algo genético, un sello que es tan nuestro como la huella digital o el iris en nuestros ojos, dos personas no pueden tener los mismos gustos, por que cada canción que no te gusta o te gusta, es un sello único. Pero como toda herencia genotípica, existe el factor fenotípico, es decir, el factor externo que gatilla ese ADN musical que llevamos dentro, y generalmente sucede de las maneras mas extrañas.

En mi caso se comenzó a manifestar alrededor del año ‘89, cuando yo tenia unos tiernos 5 años, y en una tarde entre mi mamadera y mi tuto, me quede pegado viendo Cine en su Casa del Canal 13, donde una película de unos superhéroes extraños salvaban un parque de diversiones, solo recuerdo la imagen de uno que tiraba una estrella por los ojos para salvar un carro de la montaña rusa, y uno monstruoso que tiraba fuego por la boca. Esa película me marco, nunca la olvide, pero es verdad que paso a un letargo en mi mente que no tendría sentido hasta unos 15 años después.

Un viernes cualquiera, convenzo a mi cuñado de ir a ver un tributo AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses y Kiss a un local, él muy fanático de AC/DC, y yo más expectante de ver GNR por que para ser honestos, no creía que me sabia más de una canción de Kiss y AC/DC. Luego de las cervezas de rigor, comienza el show y sale al escenario la banda tributo a Kiss, uno esperaría que una banda tributo a Kiss por lo menos se pintaran la cara, no señores, sale al escenario un petaco con pinta de metalero vieja escuela y dos guitarristas que mas parecían bailarines de yingo por las musculosas y las pichangeras (corte de pelo mas reaggetonero que rockero para nuestras lectoras internacionales… si, tu) y sin ni una fe de parte del público comienzan a sacar los primeros acordes de Rock and Roll All Night.

Gran error pensamos con mi cuñado, quemaron muy rápido los cartuchos. El error fue nuestros al ver que al cabo de la 3ra canción nos tenían prácticamente embobados, nos falto casi que tirarle los calzoncillos a aquellos extraños y coreamos prácticamente todos los temas, al final, lo único que atinamos a decir fue: “Wow, no sabia que Kiss tenia tantas canciones conocidas”, demás está decir que Sweet Roses y Ballbreaker dieron pena después de esa presentación. Y no solo eso, sino que notamos como se había activado el gen Kiss, ahí lo supimos, nos había gustado toda la vida, solo que no lo habíamos sabido.

En esos primeros acordes, recordé aquella película y me vino a la mente el calor de mi tuto y mi mamadera (para los que no han cachado, Kiss hizo una horrible película semi-infantil en los ‘80 donde tenían superpoderes), y con cada canción que pasaba, me venían mas y mas momentos a mi mente donde Kiss estuvo presente, como la vez que enfermo falte a clases y vi por primera vez Bill and Ted y alucine con la canción al final, o en una de mis primeras fiestas, (esas donde las mujeres se sentaban en un lado y los hombres en otro), como a los 11 años baile I Was Made For Loving You. Los que me conocen saben que no tengo el perfil de un fanático de Kiss, pero creo que la banda de Gene Simmons produce algo que pocas bandas hacen, se lleva en los genes. Somos The Kiss Army, y este viernes los veremos en el estadio.

Luego de volver del autoexilio de fin de año provocado por el estrés, y cuando digo estrés, hablo de canas, bruxismo e insomnio. Así que mis disculpas a los jefes, y a los pocos pero fieles lectores.

Pocas bandas son capaces de mejorar con el tiempo, y muy pocas son capaces de negar su pasado y salir airosos bajo la nueva faceta, pero no hablo de experimentar nuevos géneros, hablo de esas bandas que dicen, “esto no lo haremos nunca más” y siguen manteniéndose frescos. Por que seamos honestos, para ennumerar decepciones tenemos largas listas, pero para los éxitos, siempre es difícil ponernos de acuerdo.

En ese sentido, quiero rescatar uno de esos cambios que si fueron para mejor, de una banda que decidió dejar los gritos y los riffs metaleros por los que se hicieron famosos, y se han dedicado a producir un rock mucho mas pop, pero no por eso menos malo. Debo reconocer que al principio odié el cambio y si no es por el shuffle de mi itunes hubiese pasado al olvido junto a cientos de discos malos de bandas que solían ser buenas.

Ese es el grito de guerra, para todos los que no escuchamos música en la radio, para los que no queremos que nos digan lo que debemos escuchar, sino lo que queremos escuchar, no queremos Madonna’s con conciertos plásticos, con álbumes donde los singles aparecen como islas en un mar de canciones que nunca pasaran a la historia, sino que queremos los Goldfinger’s donde cualquier canción puede ser tu favorita. No queremos LUN ni EMOL, queremos Germenterror y el Salón del Mal. No queremos ropa de marca, queremos Asunto Polera.

Pero, ¿valdra la pena?, cuanto tenemos de que Tila Tequila se hace famosa en myspace y se gana un reality, o cuantas bandas malas que ahora tienen acceso a todo fácil sacan música mas desechable que antes, o incluso, que ignorantes como yo se sientan con autoridad para hablar de música y les impongan lo que deben escuchar. ¿Sabe el publico lo que quiere? Alan Moore dice:

Con un titulo así, para una canción, es imposible no prestarle algo de atención a esta banda, Gatsby’s American Dream, es un torrente de cultura pop (y no tan pop). Canciones con títulos basados en libros como la trilogía de los trípodes (the White Mountains, my Name is Ozymandias), que incluso da la portada al disco, o basado en Shows de Tv como Lost (You all Everybody, Station 5: the Pearl), o incluso juegos de PS (Fable, Shadow of Colossus), dejan poco a la imaginación de quien lo escucha.

Con un sonido ecléctico e inclasificable, pareciera que muestran algo inverso a muchas bandas, donde dejan el cliché para los títulos de sus canciones, pero al escuchar las letras y la música, te encuentras con algo muy diferente a lo comercial, hace pensar cuantas bandas se hacen conocidas solo por un buen logo y un nombre esnob como The Music o The Sounds (touché, rod), casi atribuyéndose el poder para ellos.

Estábamos muy mamones últimamente, así que decidí darle un poco de power esta vez a mi comentario, y como ando corto de tiempo, vamos directo al grano.

Este disco llego a mi hace poco, aunque hace años que me lo estaban recomendando. Con canciones como Straight to Your Face o This Is Now, Rise of Brutality de Hatebreed es casi la piedra angular del Hardcore, ese disco de cabecera para los amantes del género, y yo como neófito en el tema, peque de ingenuo y recién descubrí esta joyita.

Para los que no éramos habituales en el género, hace un par de años, pensar en escuchar estos gritos y rabia acumulada, me hacia pensar como alguien le puede gustar esto, pero después de que Refused me abrió los ojos, encontré un mundo nuevo en el estilo y la verdad cada dia mas me empapo de la rabia y gritos que exponen bandas como Have Heart o los mismos Hatebreed, y por eso los quiero dejar con una canción que explica algo de lo que pasa a los que no están habituados al Hardcore y escuchan por primera vez una banda asi. Esa canción es Another day, Another Vendetta y intenta explicar las motivaciones que tienen.

A esta altura faltaba el comentario del evento histórico al cual asistimos la semana pasada donde el staff casi completo de Musicosis participó. Y lo que sucedió en el club Cadillac, el día 2 de Noviembre no era algo que estaba en nuestros planes, y siendo sinceros, nuestras expectativas eran altas. Y como no, si adelante íbamos a tener a 2 tremendas bandas como Reel Big Fish, y Goldfinger.

La premisa era simple, 2 grandes bandas de nuestra adolescencia iban a tocar juntos, no era cualquier concierto, era el tremendo concierto en el papel, pero, ¿podrían superarse esas expectativas? Lo que paso fue mas allá de eso, y por primera vez en muchos conciertos de este calibre, no se trato de lo que sucedió en el escenario, sino de lo que sucedió debajo de él, y mejor dicho, dentro de nosotros. La atmosfera que se provoco fue sublime y logro crear algo que no olvidaremos, solo porque fuimos tan protagonista de ellos como las trompetas y los acordes que sonaron.

Hace 2 años pude ver a RBF en Aspen, CO (ejemmm.. xD) y si bien fue un show impecable, y la anécdota paso por que me sacaron del local por tener actitudes “latinas” como subirme al escenario y tirarme al público, y estoy seguro que la banda no tuvo ni un problema por eso, sino que fue el público el que reaccionó mal frente al hecho de que un loco con una bandera de Texas amarrada al cuello, saltara sobre ellos, y la verdad, en ese minuto me hubiese gustado haber pasado ese momento en Chile, porque ver un concierto con un público latino es lo mejor, somos el mejor público del mundo.

Al diablo con los Warped Tour y los Ozzfest, los shows acá son mejores porque pueden suceder cosas como las del domingo, donde por fin les podemos devolver la mano a todas esas bandas que nos emocionan, emocionándolos de vuelta, saltando, bailando y cantando el doble de lo que hace el resto, para que ellos alguna vez sientan, que valio la pena el viaje al fin del mundo.

Jimmy Eat World es de esas bandas que me arrepiento mucho haber conocido tan tarde, quizás siempre estuve alejado de este sonido, quizás tuve que madurar para que pudiera apreciar su música, quizás algo no permitió que mi acercamiento sucediera antes, quizás sucedió cuando tenia que suceder, no lo sé, pero como alguna ves me dijeron, es un problema de bad timing. Afortunadamente la tengo ahora, para escucharlo, y quizás una gracia de la música es que es atemporal y nunca hay un mal momento para agarrar un álbum viejo y desempolvarlo para revivir viejas emociones.

Para los que no los conocen, esta banda nace en pleno auge de la música Emo en los ‘90, y a diferencia de las bandas de la época, decide conservar un sonido más cercano a las raíces, bandas como Fugazi o Sunny Day Real Estate servirían de inspiración. Esto les costará cargar una cruz de ser los abanderados de una generación promisoria del genero: Further Seems Forever, Get up Kids, o Dashboard Confessionals, serían los que vendrían después. A mi gusto es la mejor época del Emo, donde pasaba más como placer culpable que el estigma que tiene hoy en dia, y si, no tengo miedo a reconocer que escucho Emo, mientras escuches de las bandas buenas, todo bien.

Sobre la canción no hay mucho que pueda decir, quizás que es una de las mejores del mejor álbum de JEW, Bleed American, que luego se rebautizaría como self titled debido a los ataques a las Torres Gemelas.
