El pop punk ya es una marca registrada de MTV y todas las empresas que quieren venderles productos a los jóvenes. Es el nuevo “grunge” de los ´90 y bandas como My Chemical Romance , Avril Lavinge o Fall Out Boys las están haciendo de Nirvana. Es por esto, que una gran camada de grupos pop punk apareció en EEUU buscando enriquecerse con esta fórmula.

Por esta razón, cuando escuché esta canción, que junto aIt’s Warmer In The Basement son mis favoritas del disco While the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets del 2006, me hizo mucha gracia. Su título, Pop Punk Is Sooooo ‘05 tiene ese humor que el uruguayo Gabe Saporta refleja en sus presentaciones en vivo y entrevistas. Usar una expresión tan gringa y teen para hacer una crítica a este género me pareció genial, en especial viniendo de un ex Midtown cuyo nuevo grupo es parte del sello Fueled by Ramen/Decaydance Records (el primero creado por John Janick y Vinnie Fiorello de Less Than Jake y el segundo, por Pete Wentz de FOB).

Para mi, Cobra Starship, más que un grupo pareciera ser una broma musical y la apuesta les resulta. Una banda que apunta a la pista de baile. Yo quiero bailar con CS o, por lo menos, me veo bailándolos con mi vaso de cerveza en algún pub gringo. Ojalá hubiera un lugar acá en Viña que los pusiera, porque tanto como el reggaeton, La Noche y el indie ondero me tienen chato y el pop punk is soooooo ´05.
