Probablemente la canción mas conocida de Damien Rice, se hizo famosa por aparecer en el soundtrack de Closer, una película mamona con Natalie Portman. Es también la primera que escuché del loco, cuando el friki que hacía Séptimo Vicio en Via X puso el video.

La pobre canción ha sido manoseada, comentada, mezclada y escuchada hasta el cansancio, de hecho puede que algunos de ustedes hayan perdido toda sensibilidad hacia ella y estén ya aburridos de solo pensar en escucharla. No deberían. Mas allá de lo famosa que fué en su momento la canción tiene la escencia de una buena canción triste y es un clásico de Damien Rice. Podría probablemente haber puesto otras como Older Chests o Cheers Darling, que son incluso mas enfermas, pero ésta siempre fue el single, y esa es la gracia.

Muchas veces nos pasa que una canción muy buena nos cansa por que algo o alguien la repite hasta el cansancio y dejamos de siquiera pescar el mensaje, y es una pena. Los llamo, musicóticos, a recuperar las buenas canciones, a no pescar si es la canción de fondo de Grey’s Anatomy o el último comercial de Movistar; Recuerden lo que significa para ustedes, la primera vez que la escucharon, piensen en esa persona a la que le gustaba cantarla y escuchen la letra. Sientan el ritmo y olvídense de la Rock & Pop.

Siempre me he preguntado de donde emana la capacidad creativa y la sensibilidad de algunos músicos para crear melodías y escribir letras que te llevan a estados emocionales que no imaginabas posibles. Como en todos los procesos artísticos, no hay una sola manera de estimular la sensibilidad y hacer uso de la creatividad para plasmarla en algo tangible. Es por esto, que me pareció interesante reflexionar acerca de Damien Rice.

Este cantautor irlandés nacido el 1973 y que muchos conocieron por sus temas “The Blower’s Daughter” y “Cold Water”, ya que fueron parte del soundtrack de la película Closer en el 2004, se caracteriza por escribir canciones bastante sensibles y nostálgicas (por no decir depresivas).

En el intro del track 3, Grey Room, del disco Live at Fingerprints Wall & All (originalmente es track 8 del album 9), Rice dice que no estaba seguro si iba a terminar otro álbum, porque todo llegaba a un punto en que la música (a pesar de que el la amara de verdad) se transformaba en una cosa que lo hacía sentir incomodo. Damien se dio cuenta de que entre más “down” estaba, mejor era en lo que hacía.

Esta canción –tal como explica Rice- es acerca de este estado emocional depresivo que lleva a estos procesos creativos, a esta conexión con su sensibilidad y que de alguna manera la creación artística es un mecanismo de alivio luego de toda la frustración que la misma depresión produce.

Me pregunto, ¿Porque no todos podemos salir de nuestros problemas, depresiones y frustraciones de esta misma manera? ¿No sera mejor reemplazar al psicólogo por un músico o cantautor que nos enseñe a escribir y componer? Bueno, por mientras tendremos que conformarnos con tener, para estos momentos de la vida, una banda sonora directamente desde Irlanda cortesía de Damien Rice.

“This album is mostly accidents, that is the way it feels. But beyond any preconceived notions this has ended up being, from my point of view, a collection of songs I feel I can listen to. I’ve no desire to make any statements. I’ve no desire to try to be something other than what I am, or to try to make the music something other than what it is. And I’ve no desire to break through styles or modes or anything. I think I needed to get this collection of songs out of my system…”
